The latest mobile phones are a world apart from their predecessors and have an assortment of features to enhance the users experience. One of the most popular features is the Text Message which permits users to transmit messages and files to other people for a small fee and numerous phones have a predictive text capacity that lets you input the messages considerably faster.

What Does Music in Our Schools Mean to Your Child?

Posted by Admin on February 27th, 2009

By Beth Butler

Since 1985, March has been officially designated Music In Our Schools Month (MIOSM). Who designated it as such? The MENC, The National Association for Music Education is the group responsible for heightening the awareness of the importance of music in our schools. It is a time of year when music education becomes the focus of schools across the nation.

How many of us recall learning some special concept, some stick in your head little ditty with music as the foundation, and we still cannot get it out of our mind? For that very reason bringing more attention to music in our schools is necessary and vital to the success of our youth of today. It is horrible to even think about the budget cuts in our public schools. The very ones that actually took music away from the elementary school my daughter attends for almost one month in 2008.

As an educator I was furious that my second grade child was not going to receive instruction in music at all during her school year. Obviously I was not the only one infuriated, and the school managed to find a music teacher to give them once a week instruction.

This is all a very sad reflection on the priorities, or lack thereof, that our public school systems sometime place on the arts. The efforts of a month long event such as Music In Our Schools will heighten the awareness of and commitment to the children of this United States of America and their exposure to music of all styles, cultures, and genres.

MIOSM began as a single statewide celebration in 1973. It then grew over the decades to encompass more time and more states. In 1985 it became a month long celebration of school music. The purpose is to remind citizens that school is where all children should have access to music because many homes do not even listen to a radio, a CD player or a digital media file of any music styles!

MIOSM provides music teachers the chance to bring their music programs to the attention of their schools and their communities while being able to display the benefits school music brings to students of all ages.

The acronym for MENC does not match the true name of the organization. They were originally called Music Supervisors National Conference and then Music Educators National Conference which is what MENC stands for. Then, to confuse things just a bit, their National Executive Board voted to change their name to MENC, The National Association for Music Education to better reflect their mission.

Whew! Now I am confused too! Either way, MENC is the sponsor of MIOSM, and for those of us who have children in public schools we should be thankful for this organization of dedicated members and supporters.

Personally, I love using music to learn new things as an adult! It helps my tired and very full brain grasp something new and try to fit it into the brain connection pathways. For children, many of us have the thrill to witness young people learning and remembering with music day in and day out without even realizing they are learning. Ah, to be young again!

So when you pick your child up today from school or spend some quality teaching time with a special group of young children, use music to make the learning happen fast and forever! Play a musical song to introduce a new language, put the multiplication facts to a beat, or add a little rhythm fun to your studying of grammar rules. Music, just imagine! The theme of Music In Our Schools this year.

Lily Allen Tickets - MySpace Show Reveals New Lily Allen Album

Posted by Admin on February 25th, 2009

By Brent Warnken

On February 10 U.K. songstress Lily Allen celebrated the release of her new album, It’s Not Me, It’s You, with a show put on by MySpace as part of their “Secret Show” series. The intimate performance was held at the Bowery Ballroom and featured a relaxed Allen, who sipped on wine in between songs, and a four-piece backing band covering nearly all of the songs from It’s Not Me, It’s You.

Among the highlights of the night were the synth pop track “Back to the Start,” the country-leaning “Not Fair” and a boisterous cover of Britney Spears’ hit single “Womanizer.” The full set list featured: “Everyone’s At It,” “LDN,” “I Could Say,” “Not Fair,” “F*ck You,” “Who’d Have Known,” “22,” “Him,” “Never Gonna Happen,” “Back to the Start,” “Littlest Things,” “Smile,” “The Fear” and “Womanizer.”

Allen, who launched her career on her MySpace page in 2005, thanked the forum and mockingly chastised the audience for already knowing the lyrics to her new songs, hinting that fans had illegally downloaded her songs prior to their official release. Another MySpace “Secret Show” starring Allen will be held in Tokyo on February 25 followed by another show in London with a date to be determined. The “LDN” singer will embark on a U.K. tour in March before hitting the States starting April 1 for a three-week tour. Check out Lily Allen tickets online today.

The daughter of comedian Keith Allen, London native Lily Allen turned to music as a way to cope with her family’s nomadic lifestyle (she attended 13 different schools between the ages of five and 15). Allen was a rebellious teenager who ran away to attend the U.K.’s famed Glastonbury Music Festival when she was 14 and dropped out of high school to following year to pursue a career in music. The dropout posted her demo tapes on her MySpace page less than one year later and enlisted Mark Ronson (with whom she had previously collaborated with for a cover of Kaiser Chief’s “Oh My God” on her second mixtape), Futurecoat and Greg Kurstin to help her work on her debut album.

Lily Allen’s first two singles, “LDN” and “Smile” were officially released in the summer of 2006 and her debut album, Alright, Still, followed soon after. Soon the English rose was the toast of the music industry and Lily Allen tickets were flying off the shelves as she embarked on a tour spanning the U.K., Japan, Australia and the U.S.

On her upcoming tour Allen will cover old tracks as well as new songs from It’s Not Me, It’s You, which the 23-year-old recorded at Eagle Rock Studios in Los Angeles with Kurstin. The always candid Allen tackles her complicated relationship with her father in “He Wasn’t There” and her tabloid reputation as well, in a series of songs that display a more electronic sound than those on her previous album.

Ibiza Sobers Up To Welcome Family Tourists

Posted by Admin on February 23rd, 2009

By Henry Ashworth

University students and others just out of college in Europe often have just one place in mind for their summer holiday - Ibiza.

To say that Ibiza is known for its nightlife would be somewhat of an understatement. The Mediterranean island, just off the coast of Spain, houses a legendary club scene that draws young tourists in droves each summer. From June to September, the island is a non stop party consisting mostly of young Britons, Germans and Spanish looking for a good time.

Ibiza clubs have become a proving ground for DJs from far and wide. They flock to the clubs to try out their best sounds and gauge the reactions of the wild crowds.

Although Ibiza is known for its club scene, it may soon become even more popular for its summer concerts. Ibiza Rocks, a summer-long music festival which started in 2005, is rapidly becoming an even bigger draw for foreign tourists than the notoriously hedonistic nightlife.

Traditionally, the biggest and best summer music festivals have been in Britain. Brave bands and music lovers have gladly suffered the sometimes miserable British weather to be a part of a legendary festival such as Glastonbury or the Isle or Wight. It’s not uncommon to see festival goers decked out in full rain gear and covered in mud while enjoying the festival sounds.

But Ibiza Rocks is challenging that tradition. Why suffer through the rain, organisers ask, when you can enjoy a summer music festival the way it should be? Ibiza offers an almost perfect climate and year round sunshine. What better place could there be for a music festival celebrating life, youth, and music itself?

That isn’t to say that the club scene is dying down in favour of outdoor festivals. In fact, the new infusion of youthful concert goers seems to have brought new life to the clubs. The DJs are still spinning and the drinks are still flowing, and somehow holidaymakers manage to squeeze in some late night clubbing after a full day of festival fun.

Not into constant partying? Do you still want to enjoy the endless beauty of the Ibiza coast? The island’s tourism board has recently been working to make Ibiza known for more than clubs and parties. It’s entirely possible to enjoy an intimate dinner at a fine restaurant followed by a somewhat sedate live music show at a beach bar.

Resorts on the island are doing their part to make Ibiza more family friendly by offering kids’ activities. And since most of the late night revellers sleep well into the afternoon, the island is perfectly serene for those who choose to do their sight seeing early.

Eco-tourism is a growing industry on Ibiza. Every year, an increasing number of tourists come not for the rowdy clubs, but for the natural beauty of the island. They often visit in the off season and spend their days hiking, swimming, practicing group yoga, and cleaning up the beaches.

Today, Ibiza is no longer just a party destination. No matter who you are or what you hope to accomplish on your holiday, you can carve out the perfect experience on the sandy shores of Ibiza this year.

Coldplay vs. Satriani

Posted by Admin on February 21st, 2009

Although Coldplay maybe one of the Top 40 greatest British bands, and the singer bagging Gwyneth Paltrow, they seem to have been picking on other people’s songs, specifically guitar god, Joe Satriani.

“The 52-year-old guitar god says in a lawsuit filed this week in Los Angeles that Coldplay copied “substantial, original portions” of his 2004 track “If I Could Fly.” He’s looking for a hefty payout and/or an order blocking the band from performing or releasing “Viva la Vida” in the future.”

Hmmm…
